Braehead’s Green Gym

Braehead Shopping Centre has won a top gong for being green.

The mall is being given a BTCV Green Hero Award in the local partnership in Scotland category of the annual awards for its role in helping improve the environment throughout Renfrewshire.

And as a regional winner, Braehead goes on to the national finals of the awards presented by BTCV – the conservation charity formerly known as the British Trust for Conservation volunteers.

This organisation runs projects up and down the country bringing volunteers together to take hands-on action to improve both rural and urban environments.

Thanks to the financial support from Braehead, BCTV has been able to organise a series of Green Gyms in Renfrewshire, which encourages people not only to clean up and improve the environment, but get fit at the same time.

A spokesperson from BCTV said: “With the support of the Braehead Shopping Centre, the Renfrewshire Green Gym has been able to work with over 75 regular volunteers and improve more than 50 sites throughout the local area.  “The group now goes out three afternoons a week and recruits volunteers from all over Renfrewshire.  “As well as providing funding, the shopping centre team has shown a genuine commitment to its aims and even joined the volunteers for a practical session to experience it for themselves.  “And the centre has helped to promote the group by displaying posters and hosting promotional stands.”

Braehead’s general manager, Peter Beagley said: “We take our responsibilities to the environment very seriously. “As well as the very rigorous recycling scheme we operate within Braehead itself, we are keen to support organisations who are committed to improving the environment throughout Renfrewshire.”
